September 25, 2008
Marvel Studios Chairman David Maisel has confirmed that Spiderman, the Musical will be coming to Broadway. The announcement was made at the Consumer Conference in New York. The Spiderman Musical has been the subject of lots of hearsay and speculation in the past. A concrete announcement by the head of Marvel Studios assures Broadway fans that Spiderman tickets will be going on sale at some point.
Right now details are few, and no concrete Spiderman Musical dates have been announced. Maisel did say the show is scheduled to open sometime in 2009.
It has been reported that the musical will be directed by Broadway veteran Julie Taymor, who won two Tony’s for her work on Disney’s The Lion King. If anyone can bring the webslinger’s gravity-defying acrobatics to life on the stage its Taylor.
Bono and the Edge from U2 have been chosen to write at least some of the music for the musical. Comic book fans will recall that U2 wrote the theme song “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” for the 1995 film Batman Forever.
